Digital Literacy is the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills. . Further, a digitally literate person: . ● Possesses the variety of skills – technical and cognitive – required to find, understand, evaluate, create, and communicate digital information in a wide variety of formats; ● Is able to use diverse technologies appropriately and effectively to retrieve information, interpret results, and judge the quality of that information; ● Understands the relationship between technology, life-long learning, personal privacy, and appropriate stewardship of information; ● Uses these skills and the appropriate technology to communicate and collaborate with peers, colleagues, family, and on occasion, the general public; ● Uses these skills to actively participate in civic society and contribute to a vibrant, informed, and engaged community.-ALA Digital Literacy Task Force (8/2012)
Course Objectives:
Students will understand cyber bullying and internet safety topics
Students will acquire creation skills using web 2.0 tools by designing and publishing projects
Students will communicate digitally
Students will create a digital portfolio into which THEY will embed 5-6 projects
Students will present their digital portfolios to fellow students and school community
Students will know the essential questions to ask when they encounter media information for evaluation
Students will understand the concept of a digital footprint and appropriate online behavior
Students will understand basic computer components, systems and vocabulary
Storybird Project Objectives :
Students will explore Storybird.com illustrator options and select one they think they can create a story with
Students will create a story map considering the image options available to them within their selected illustrator
Students will create a story with 10-15 slides that contains characters, setting, plot, problem and solution
Students will correct all spelling and grammar issues
Students will edit, finish and publish their storybird digital books
Students will embed their published products in their digital portfolios
Students will assess themselves with checklist 1-4
Wordle Project Objectives:
Students will open WORD and type their names 4 times and at least 15 adjectives that describe or represent themselves, highlight and copy the text
Students will open wordle.net and transfer the text, manipulate the font, layout and color
Students will print 2 copies
Students will use shortcut keys to take a screenshot and save it to the desktop
Students will embed their screenshots in their website pages
Ad Project Objectives:
Students will explore advertisements print images and deconstruct print advertisements
Students will understand that all ads are constructed and are produced for a particular purpose
Students will understand that all media messages contain embedded values and points of view
Students will understand that media messages can influence beliefs, attitudes, values, and behaviors
Student will create their own flyer, media message, PSA, or item to influence a particular audience
Student will analyze their audience
Students will logon to postermywall .com or simple booklet and create a flyer containing all the pertinent information needed and use media tools to influence their audience
Students will know the terminology/vocabulary associated with advertising
Photo Peach Project Objectives:
Students will create a folder on the desktop and save images to that folder for the project
Students will open Google search engine, research and save 30 images that reflect them personally
Students will logon on and upload images into Photo Peach – a web 2.0 too – then create a slideshow
Students will set the sequence, transitions, write captions set a cover page, set to music and publish the slideshow
Students will take the embed code and post it to their websites
Students will review each others’ work and write comments
Students will assess themselves on the project with a checklist 1-4Students will understand copyright rules of images
Students will understand when they post they leave a permanent digital footprint
Podcasting Project Objectives:
Students will select an appropriate nursery Rhyme or short story they can read fluently
Students will record in audacity the story and add sound effects and music
Students will assess themselves with checklist 1-4
Student will upload an image and the mp3 file to embed into their digital portfolio page
Students will edit the recording, save, publish and export it as an MP3 file

Animoto Booktrailer Project Objectives:
Students will determine which book they want to create a trailer for
Students will research author details and write a 2-3 sentence about the author note
Students will write a 2-3 sentence book summary
Students will write 15 text slides statements
Students will write keywords for each text slide for gathering images
Students will write a 2-3 sentence recommendation for the book
Students will create a new folder on the desktop and save images to that folder for the project
